Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and Schools Chancellor Joel I. Klein today announced the opening of 26 new school locations, adding more than 17,000 new seats for the 2010-11 school year. The new buildings, annexes and leased spaces represent the most new classroom seats to come on line in one year since the School Construction Authority (SCA) was created in 1988, putting the Department of Education on track to add nearly 100,000 new school seats across the City by 2013.

Homes in the metropolitan area have held their value better than in most other big cities as more people are moving to the region than deserting it. Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Schools Chancellor Joel Klein and United Federation of Teachers President Michael Mulgrew today celebrated New York State's selection and award of $700 million in the U.S. Department of Education’s Race to the Top competition. This award will provide between $250 million and $300 million to New York City schools to support the creation of a new teacher evaluation system, develop a more rigorous curriculum and State assessments based on the national Common Core Standards, and expand a range of proven reforms first introduced in New York City.

For the seventh straight month, New York City's unemployment rate has dropped and now sits once again below the nationwide rate. New York continues to weather the national recession better than most cities, but we know too many New Yorkers continue to struggle to make ends meet. We have a long way to go to fully restore our economic health, but clearly we are moving in the right direction.
NYT: Unemployment Rate Dips Again

The city's unemployment rate, which was 9.5 percent in June, has now declined for seven straight months since peaking at 10.5 percent at the end of 2009. It was slightly lower than the national unemployment rate - 9.5 percent in July - as it was in April and May.
